The last time Fox TV aired a show featuring potential brides, controversy and criticism dogged the network. Viewers and critics trashed the producers for not doing a thorough background check on groom Rick Rockwell it turned out he once had a restraining order against him for allegedly threatening an ex-girlfriend. And even Darva Conger , the so- called winner of the special broadcast, complained about the setup. Sunday night, Fox resumes its wedding-themed reality programming with “Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska,” a six-week series that features five women in wedding dresses looking for Mr. Right in the coldest, northernmost state in the country. Two of the contestants are from the Bay Area, and if their comments are any barometer of the show’s appeal — and the lessons that Fox learned from airing Rockwell’s and Conger’s nuptials two years ago — then “Looking for Love” could even attract feminist viewers. On this show, the women are in control, not the men, though that doesn’t mean the would-be brides all read Ms. In Sunday night’s episode, the only one available for preview, Andrea and the other women — after trudging through the Alaskan snow in wedding dresses – – go to Matanuska Glacier, where they see rows of eligible men standing before them. The women walk in and out of the rows, inspecting the bachelors as a five-star general would an attachment of troops, before choosing whom they’ll date for a few days. At the end of the dating period, the women can pick other prospects.

Two University of Alaska professors have found a new way to help better define Alaska’s huge coal reserves. Their idea depends upon the fact that coal is formed on land in extensive sheet deposits. As the years go by, movements of the earth’s crust and erosion deform and break up these sheets. Some portions of the coal seams remain buried and others may outcrop here and there.
Mapping of those portions not exposed would be helped if it was possible to identify a particular coal seam regardless of where it outcrops. Professors Don Triplehorn and Don Turner have found that they can use the University’s rock dating laboratory to date the coal seams. The coal itself cannot be dated, but volcanic ash deposited in layers within the coal seams can. Called ash partings, these layers contain minerals which can be accurately dated using the potassium-argon and fission-track techniques.
It appears that there have been frequent enough ash depositing volcanic eruptions in Alaska’s past to make the dating of ash partings a useful tool. Example of Using the Dating Method: Dating and microscopic study of ash partings in coal exposed at A and B show it is in the same bed. A second bed lies below the coat exposed at A.
Therefore, digging at point C should locate coal bed No. Also, digging anyplace between A and B should locate both coal beds.
