The town developed into a tourist centre in the 18th-century when a well-respected Limerick surgeon discovered the positive effects of its mineral waters. It was due to the popularity of these mineral springs and the huge amount of people going there that led to the Lisdoonvarna “matchmaking tradition”. September became the peak month of the holiday season and with the harvest safely in, bachelor farmers flocked to Lisdoonvarna in search of a wife. All ages and nationalities queue at his table hoping that he will help find them a mate. For the month of September, dances run daily and carry on into the wee hours of the morning. Every September, thousands flock here for what’s billed as the world’s largest matchmaking festival. If local folklore is to be believed, people have been finding their “match” here for more than years. The festival was created to help farmers who were so busy tending to their livestock that they didn’t have time to find brides. Every September they would come down from their hillsides and the lucky ones would return with lifelong companions.
And Lisdoonvarna still attracts its fair share of similarly isolated Irishmen. It can be very, very lonely,” he told BBC News. The women, too, come in hope of a match. After that, the year-old widow enjoyed two months of delightful conversation before dying. Daly — who thinks he is in his early 70s but does not know precisely because, he says, the priest who kept such records drank a lot — has been thinking about love most of his life. While the festival is on, Mr. Daly conducts business in a pub. He keeps these details in a large, overflowing book held together with tape and a shoestring, inherited from his matchmaker father and possessed, he says, of supernatural romantic powers if you touch it with one hand, you will fall in love in six months; both hands, you will be married in six months; and if you are already married, you will fall in love all over again.
Then, sometimes with no more than a twinkle and a nod, he might introduce two people, buying a woman a drink or nudging a farmer toward the dance floor. The rest of the year, Mr. Daly makes matches by mail and by telephone, though visitors from as far away as New York have turned up on the doorstep of his County Clare farmhouse. Daly, who has just recently decided to learn how email works.

For the month of September, this tiny spa town of residents hosts the popular Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival — a month-long celebration bringing together hopeful romantics from around the world. The festival is notorious for its lively all-day, all-night dancing and impromptu marriage proposals often triggered after a few pints at the pub.
A third-generation matchmaker, Daly is best known for presiding over the festival. Matchmaking in Lisdoonvarna dates back generations and flourished with the rise of spa tourism in the s. The dance floor is flooded with spirited party-goers, step-dancing and twirling their dance partners, some decked out in sparkly bling. The next day, we drag our weary butts out of bed and traipse into town for a lookie-loo. The first stop is the Roadside Tavern for a bite and beer tasting, teeming with fatigued festival-goers.
Here on the second floor of the pub, Brewmaster Peter Curtin makes a handful of malty ales — none of which are bottled. Within minutes, a sing-along erupts in the pub. A pint or two later, my sweet tooth is acting up, so I mosey over to Hazel Mountain Chocolates , a bean to bar artisanal chocolate factory located in the foothills of the Burren. Nestled amongst craggy hills and emerald green fields, the scenery here is sublime — but the heavenly aroma of roasted beans and sweet chocolate equally entices visitors.

The organisers have said that as the next phase of ‘Reopening Ireland’ has been postponed, which would have allowed indoor gatherings of people and outdoors, the event will now have to be cancelled. Catch me a catch That’s exactly what thousands of attendees have in mind when they attend the annual Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival in autumn. Over 60, attendees gather to enjoy the entertainment, ‘craic’ and the chance to be paired with a special someone.

My name is Willie Daly and I am a third generation traditional Irish matchmaker: a gift I inherited from my father and his father before him. On the west coast of Ireland, just a few miles from Lisdoonvarna in County Clare , I live on a small elevated farm with horses, ponies and donkeys within view of the Cliffs of Moher , the wild Atlantic Ocean of our own Liscannor Bay and the beautiful, spellbinding, magical Burren. I have been matchmaking for over 50 years and am proud to say I have matched over couples in my lifetime.
Matchmaking is in my blood and I am fortunate to have inherited the skills of my father and grandfather. Like them, I know instinctively what makes a good match. The traditional tools I use are intuition, subtlety, and an understanding of human nature. When you contact me I will provide a simple matchmaking form for you to fill in and return to me.
